Our Roots…Caring for Seniors since 1866
We trace our roots to the end of the Civil War, when the Society for the Relief of Respectable Aged Women opened a small residence for 13 women in Newark, New Jersey. Word quickly got out and demand grew.
In 1880, a nursing care unit was added. In spite of the lack of government aid, the residence expanded to house 60 seniors. Just a year later, as a parallel development, a division of the Newark YWCA created a department for incurables in its boarding house. Within 25 years, they had also outgrown their facilities; ultimately, they became known as the Home for Incurables and Convalescents. At that time, 100 years ago now, that facility launched a school to train nurses, thus providing a reservoir of skilled professionals for the Home.
In 1883, a second building expanded their capabilities. In 1906, the Newark organization launched the Home for Incurables and Convalescents and the Society for the Relief of Aged Women, both of which grew quickly. In 1958, the two groups merged to form the Memorial Center for Women.
A Modern Green Hill Blooms
Finally, in 1965, the Board of Directors purchased our wonderful home and gracious properties on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange, NJ. The building itself was built in the 1920s as Green’s Hotel, which fast became a popular country refuge from the City. In 1986, 33 new suites for Assisted Living further expanded our capacity.
Although so much in our world has changed since, the need for thoughtful personal care for both men and women has only grown.
We are proud to continue this tradition on the highest level for today’s expanding New York/New Jersey senior community.
