January Superfoods 2018 January Super Food at Green Hill with Chef Jomar and Michiko Tomioka RD focused on the health benefits of citrus. Residents enjoyed Brazilian Lemonade (called Swiss Lemonade) and a citrus mousse. Citrus foods are a good source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, including vitamin C, potassium, folate, calcium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, and much more. Citrus is a low-calorie food with no cholesterol. The whole fruit is considered a 'good' carbohydrate. Vitamin C aids on the formation of collagen and is good for the skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and bones. Vitamin C helps in wound treatment, tissue repair, anemia and stress. Potassium supports new cell production and growth. Potassium is an important electrolyte for supporting healthy blood pressure and nerve impulses to the muscles. Evidence indicates that a diet with citrus foods can help reduce the risk and/or retard the progression of cardiovascular disease, cancer, anemia and cataracts.
